Why Driveway Grading Is the Most Important Step Nobody Talks About

Most people think a driveway is just gravel on dirt. Dump it, spread it, done. But that's exactly how you end up with potholes, ruts, and washouts after the first heavy rain. The gravel isn't the problem - it's what's underneath it, and how it's shaped.

We use a Level Best grading box to get the crown and slope dialed in before a single load of gravel ever hits the ground. That grading box lets us control the pitch of the surface so water sheds off to the sides instead of pooling in the middle or running straight down the path and washing everything out. It sounds simple, but it's the difference between a driveway that holds up for years and one you're constantly patching.

Here's what we're actually doing when we grade a driveway: we're shaping the base material so it has the right crown, the right slope toward drainage points, and a consistent surface that compacts properly. Compaction is huge. A loose, uneven base won't hold under vehicle weight. Over time it shifts, it settles unevenly, and you end up with soft spots and ruts. We compact as we go so the finished surface is solid from the start.
